We stock a wide range of horse rugs designed for different conditions and horse needs. Here’s a quick breakdown of the main types.
Summer Rugs
Summer rugs are lightweight and designed to protect your horse from flies, insects, and sun exposure while still allowing airflow to keep them cool. Often called fly sheets or mesh rugs, they are ideal for warmer months and turnout in mild weather.
Winter Rugs
Winter rugs provide insulation and warmth during colder months. They are typically waterproof and lined to help your horse stay dry and comfortable during wet weather. Fill weights (e.g. 100g, 250g, 450g) tell you how much warmth the rug offers.
Stable Rugs
Stable rugs are designed for indoor use when your horse is in the stable. They provide warmth without the waterproof outer layer used for outdoor rugs. Great for clipped horses or cold barns.
Choosing the Right Fit
A well-fitting rug is important so your horse stays comfortable and avoids rubbing or irritation. When selecting a rug, make sure it fits snugly across the chest and shoulders without restricting movement.
- Measure from the centre of the chest to the furthest point of the rump (in inches or cm, depending on the brand chart).
- Check that the wither area is not tight and that there is room at the shoulders.
- Leg straps and surcingles should hold the rug in place without being overly tight.
- Neck covers (fixed or detachable) should sit comfortably without rubbing the mane.
Fill Weight & When to Use It
Higher fill = more warmth. Typical ranges:
- 0g – 50g — Light or unfilled (rain sheet / cool weather)
- 100g – 150g — Light warmth (mild winter or stable)
- 200g – 300g — Medium (most winter turnout)
- 350g – 450g+ — Heavy (very cold climates or heavily clipped horses)
Turnout rugs usually have a waterproof outer; stable rugs often do not. Combo rugs include a neck cover for extra coverage.
